If you only read one thing

  • Steelers · Lost 24–27 at Browns“Did you see that ludicrous display in Cleveland on Thursday? Back from 21–10 down to tie it, then a 56-yard field goal with ten seconds left.”
  • Bears · Won 23–12 vs Jets“Did you see the Bears on Sunday? Nine minutes sixteen seconds with the ball at the end. Nine minutes!”
  • Packers · Won 17–14 at Buccaneers“Did you see the Packers in Tampa? Two touchdowns from the two-yard line, and then they spent the fourth quarter trying to give it back.”
How it works: Find your team. Say the opener. Nod at whatever comes back, then read out the matching answer. If it goes badly, fall back on the thing about them and look into the middle distance. Three teams this week, ordered by kickoff.

THE OPENER“Did you see that ludicrous display in Cleveland on Thursday? Back from 21–10 down to tie it, then a 56-yard field goal with ten seconds left.”
IF THEY REPLY
  • “Rodgers threw three touchdowns, though.”
“Three touchdowns, two interceptions. The second one on the last snap they had. You can’t build a house on that.”
  • “They came back to tie it, mind.”
“From 21–10 down, yes. Rodgers ran the two-point conversion in himself. Then they let Szmyt try a 56-yarder with ten seconds left. Which he made.”
  • “Well, the Browns are 3–1 now.”
“Which tells you everything about the Browns and nothing about the Steelers. Or the other way round. I haven’t decided.”
THE THING ABOUT THE STEELERS IS…“…they only really start playing once they’ve had a good long look at the scoreboard. Nothing in the third quarter, fourteen in the fourth.”
IF PRESSEDPittsburgh scored first, a 12-yard Aaron Rodgers pass to Roman Wilson, then gave up 21 points in the second quarter. Rodgers threw fourth-quarter touchdowns to Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth and ran in a two-point conversion himself to tie it 24–24 with 1:42 left. Cleveland’s Andre Szmyt kicked a 56-yard field goal with ten seconds remaining, and Cleveland intercepted Rodgers on Pittsburgh’s next snap. Rodgers finished with 299 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions; DK Metcalf caught five passes for 115 yards.

THE OPENER“Did you see the Bears on Sunday? Nine minutes sixteen seconds with the ball at the end. Nine minutes!”
IF THEY REPLY
  • “The Bears won, though?”
“They did, 23–12. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the last drive. Eighteen plays. The Jets never saw the ball again.”
  • “Monangai, eh?”
“A hundred and forty-six yards and both touchdowns. Thirty carries. The man was the offence.”
  • “Bagent threw an interception.”
“One, in the second quarter. He also threw for 268 yards, which nobody will mention, because they’d rather talk about the one.”
THE THING ABOUT THE BEARS IS…“…they would rather run it from the one on fourth down than kick. They did it twice in the first quarter, and it only worked once.”
IF PRESSEDChicago beat the New York Jets 23–12 at Soldier Field to go 3–1. Kyle Monangai ran 30 times for 146 yards and both Bears touchdowns, and Cairo Santos kicked three field goals. Tyson Bagent completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards with one interception; Rome Odunze caught six for 94. The Jets’ only touchdown, a 58-yard Geno Smith pass to Isaiah Williams, was followed by a missed extra point, and the Bears then ran out the last 9:16 on an 18-play drive.

IF THEY REPLY
  • “They won, didn’t they?”
“By three. Against the Buccaneers, who are 0–4. I’d keep that quiet if I were them.”

  • “Love threw two touchdowns.”
“Both from two yards out. Then an interception at the Tampa 7 with 4:26 left. Swings and roundabouts.”
THE THING ABOUT THE PACKERS IS…“…they’ll get to the three-yard line and then start thinking about it.”
IF PRESSEDGreen Bay won 17–14 at Tampa Bay, who are now 0–4, to reach 2–2. Jordan Love threw two-yard touchdown passes to Matthew Golden and Tucker Kraft, and Trey Smack kicked a 58-yard field goal on the last play of the first half.
